From the reel: Light rail detours

The construction-proof Google profile checklist

When your street's a building site, Google Maps is your front door. Here's how to keep it right while the works go on.

Set it up once

  • How to get there

Add the easiest way in to your description and a profile update, in words: "Enter from X Street, we're open during the works."

  • Where to park

Name the nearest parking and how far it is on foot.

  • Photos of your entrance now

Fences and all. Customers need to recognise your door as it looks today.

  • Hours that are right

Set special hours for any day the works change them, so nobody walks to a locked door.

Every week (2 minutes)

  • Check for edits you didn't make

Google may apply edits suggested by the public without asking you first. Open your profile each week and check the hours, address and phone are still yours.

  • Post a short update

"Still open, here's the way in." Keep phone numbers and links out of the post text; use the post's button instead.

An ACT Assembly committee said in October 2026 that support for businesses hit by light rail works hasn't been enough. That's a recommendation, not a decision.
